Most frame mount hinges are made to mount on 3/4" unless specified differently. Common thickness in the USA is 3/4" material.

However, the next thing you need to consider is how thick the material you used for the face frame is. You will want frame mounted hinges, preferably (see below). 1 1/4" is common for cabinets that DO have face frames (sounds like you do?).

These will often be intended for side mounted hinges.Ī Full overlay would work for you, but you can pick any specific overlay measurement you like where X in a "X" Overlay means the amount it overlaps. This is because it is made to fully overlap a 3/4" faceless plywood end. As opposed to an Inset, or Inlay, door which goes inside the opening, flush with the face:Ī "Full" Overlay normally means it overlays 3/4" inch. Also, you can reference this useful page: Glossary of Cabinet Hinge TermsĪn Overlay door will cover over (lay over) part of the face frame of the cabinet opening. I'm not entirely sure which you are referring to, so I'll cover both.

How to Measure for Corner Cabinet DoorsĬorner cabinets with a face frame that is a 45 degree angle to the cabinets to the left or right of it are unique when it comes to overlay cabinet doors with a large (full) overlay. We are dealing with two different measurements here, frame width and frame thickness. To do that use the calculation for the double doors without a center stile above. With the center stile only 1 1/2″ thick you cannot create a 2″ reveal, instead you can shrink the center reveal so it looks like there is no center stile and therefore it will look like the two doors almost touch in the center. The rest of the reveals between the cabinet doors in this example would be 2″ (1″ remaining from the overlay on each cabinet door). However, in the example, the reveal between the double doors will not be the same as the rest of the kitchen. So use the calculation for a single overlay cabinet door. If it is not, use the calculations above to measure for your double doors.įor example, if you have a 1/2″ overlay with a 1 1/2″ wide face frame (and therefore center stile) you have enough space for the cabinet door to overlay 1/2″ on the enter stile with a 1/2″ reveal in the center. The only overlay option for frameless is a full-overlay which covers the entire (to around 1/8″) of the cabinet sides.įor overlay double cabinet doors with a center stile, the measurement will not change if the overlay is small enough to allow 2 doors to overlay on it. You can use either overlay or inset cabinet doors for a frameless cabinet as well. If it is not square, you can struggle with hanging doors to have an even reveal (the space between the cabinet frame and the cabinet door). One of the challenges with frameless cabinets is keeping the cabinet box perfectly square. It is a very simple, modern design for cabinets. They are sometimes called European style cabinets and were made very popular by Ikea. The plywood edges are covered in edge banding to finish them. For cabinets with double doors, you can have a center stile to give a little more wiggle room when installing the double doors.Ī frameless cabinet is a cabinet that is only made from plywood.
